Silkie with large growth under leg feathers

Can she put weight on the leg? Or is it completely useless? Can you feel any closed fracture? Feel any bone fragments?

Do you have access to a vet willing to see a chicken? Can you afford X-rays?

I really don’t know what that is. It could be a tumor or bone infection. Ingrown feather cysts can cause lumps and can abscess. They are full of solid pus and a feather can be found beneath the when probed.
It’s not smooth. It kind of feels like little pokey hairs around it. And she was happy and making her noises she love law to make. She enjoyed the soak.

She was putting very little weight on it. She will when she really wants to move around. Not sure how much it would cost for vet to do X-ray.

It's not broken if she can stand on it. The worst would be a hairline fracture, more likely a sprain since it's swollen. X-rays would cost a couple hundred dollars. I think I'll stay with my original guess that it's a sprain and try to keep her inactive. It could take up to six weeks for it to heal. But you should see improvement in a week or two.

Have you given thought to how she could have injured the leg?

My younger son helps me with the chickens and she has “flown” out of his hands a couple of times. But she hasn’t shown any signs of injury. But I’m guessing it could have been from that. I have told him to make sure she is sat down gently. Other than that I can’t think.

Thanks so much for your advice! ☺️ I will definitely be treating at such and her be very careful.

I have attached a better picture of my silkie’s leg. I took a video as well but it wouldn’t let me load a video on here. In the video she is just enjoying herself pecking at some scratch in her special space. I have been doing epsom salt soaks twice a day for about 3 and 1/2 days now. How much longer should I keep doing them?
other than her hurt leg, she is happy as can be. In the video you can hear her making all kinds of happy noises and having a good time. Lol

Remember a photo is two dimensional, not 3-D. All your fine photo shows is feathers between two fingers.

Is there any change at all? Improvement of motion? Any size reduction of the swelling? Continue the soaks for as long as is convenient.

Load you video onto You Tube first, copy the URL once posted and then post the URL here. The video will embed.

It may have come down a tad. Definitely not any worse. She seems happy. I’m curious as to what it looks/feels like when they have ingrown feathers?

Ingrown feathers are called feather cysts, and they look like a pimple. If you look hard, you can see the trapped pin feather doubled over just under the skin. A little nick with a razor blade frees it and it pops up. Usually feather-footed chickens get them on their feet.

If you are up to it, I suggest keeping on with a ten minute soak each evening. Epsom salts can improve blood circulation, encouraging healing.
