I recently purchased 2 pure silkies, 3 months old, from someone with a backyard flock. We recently discovered one of them has 5 toes on one foot (normal) and only 2 toes on the other foot. There's no evidence of a wound that we can see and she appears to be acting normal. But how could this have happened? The other chicken has all 10 toes but one of them curls and crosses over (the back small toes). When we recieved them, they smelled awful and one had obviously had her head feathers pecked out. Is there anything we can do to prevent further foot issues from these chickens? Could it be genetic or due to poor conditions?
