I found one of my silkies 7 yrs old dead in the corner of my chicken house, the day before I noticed her standing in the chicken house by herself , could she have died of old age?how long do chickens live?she hasnt layed for a long time. I take very good care of my chickens, and they have a pretty nice chicken house and outdoor area, any feedback appreciated

Seven years is pretty good for a chicken. They can live to be a dozen or so years old, but it is more common for them to live to be just a few years old. My neighbor has a flock of True Rhode Island Reds that lay pretty regularly, and they are around ten years old.

Thank you for the information, what are your thoughts on having straw bales in an outdoor coop for the chickens to jump up on ?I lined my coop last year with straw bales and covered the wire on top with heavy plastic, I have since removed the plastic and was wondering if I shoul put fresh straw bales for them to jump around on?
