I'm thinking the combs turn mulberry colored as they mature?
I have a lavender roo that has a very dark mulberry comb, but I think his was really light when he was young. I look for the wideness of the comb, too. The girls' combs tend to get obscured by the crest, but the boys' are more prominent from about 3-4 weeks onwards. It's hard to tell, though, until they crow or lay an egg!

I purchased them straight run as day old chicks from a PA hatchery and had them shipped. My first silkies. I Split an order with my brother and kept these 3.
I've since hatched out 26 more myself.
My hatch rates were so good ( is there a "too good)" that I am now under the gun to build more coops and fast unless I let some shopwgilr babies go. Otherwise my garage is becoming a nursery for the winter. Hubbies tools will need some real dusting off by springtime.
That's great. I was asking because I have a friend who is trying to find some nb partridges to add to her lines.
Generally if a silkie has a light comb to start out, it will not get darker. Usually, if it changes, it's the other way around, with it getting lighter with age. Do you have pics of your lavender? I'd love to see him
