So we found 5 eggs yesterday morning! We have 2 silkies and 4 red sex links. Not sure who laid them, I would assume it was probably multiple chickens that laid in the same spot, is it possible for one chicken to lay this many overnight??? Also my silkies have both started to crow. Will the silkies fertilize the eggs of the red sex links? The silkies are such scaredy cats, I was told that a rooster would really man up and be protective which they have not shown so far? Sorry for all the questions, I'm new to the byc community! Thank you

Well, a hen usually lays only one egg per day, so I'm sure your hens are all laying in the same nest. For some reason, hens are like that--even though you might have four nest boxes that look identical, they will ALL pick one box that is their favorite, and even wait in line or pile on top of eachother to lay their eggs. Hens are funny like that.

Now, your silkie boys might not be able to mate successfully with large fowl breeds because of their size. The bigger hens might not tolerate being mated by the small fry.

A silkie rooster can get more brave and defend the coop, but this takes time...they'll probably become more brave and assertive when they get a bit older.

Take care,
Sharon
