Silkies / leg bands

[Bat Cave Silkies]

I've finally reached the point where my memory can no longer keep up with my Silkie flock

Silkie breeders : what type, brand, size leg band do you recommend for Silkies?
At what age do you apply them?
Any help would be greatly appreciated

I use size 9 plastic numbered bandettes. I also use the jiffy wing bands. When the chicks hatch, I mark a stripe down their back in permanent marker corresponding to which hen or pair they came from. Then at 1 week of age I apply the wing bands.

I usually use the permanent band from the ABA and when they are old enough, I band them. I like those because they have the year of birth, and a number which is how I track which parents they come from, their growth, guesses on their sex, etc. I also use the size 9 bandettes.

Sundown--how long does it take for the permanent marker to wear off, and don't the other chicks "pick" at it?

i've been wondering this as well. where do you get leg bands and wing bands from?

I use the number 9 or 10 bandett and use colored zip ties while they are young chicks, the zip ties have to be changed every few weeks as they grow. I often will use a bandett and a colored zip tie as a combo for more detailed info. I tried using my memory at the begining and failed miserably lol

The number is written on the band twice, so I make sure one number is on the outside of the band, and the other number is in the middle with the rest of the band covering it, incase the outside one starts to wear off.
