Silkies Of A Different Color

Pics
Some beautiful chickens on this thread. I was never interested in Silkies, but am changing my mind!! I do have a question though on thier being able to see. How well can they see??????

I have had hatchery silkies (small crests) and silkies from a breeder (large crests). The hatchery silkies could see better than the breeder silkies, but the crests were less beautiful.

When I threw treats on the ground, my breeder silkies had a hard time finding the treats. You CAN trim the fluff some, which would help a lot. I didn't (did when they were little but didn't keep up with it).

Thanksfor that answer!

Fur N Feathers, I have a chocolate roo to go with your little hen.

Here is the little hen I have in with him. Pardon her appearance & lack of crest as she chose some of our coldest weather to do a hard molt.

Believe it or not, the picture below is what she looked like this summer - dark blue with white undercoat showing through. I posted her on here to try & figure out if she was a mottled, reverse splash, or ???? No sense worrying about it now unless she molts & goes back to her original color. It was a nice color though & everyone wanted babies if they looked like her. So much for counting chicks before they hatched (and before Momma hen molted)!

So what do you say. Do we start a chocolate project?

Sounds like a PLAN!!!

I wish we were closer! Marble is a pretty girl. I will be interested to see what they produce together.

I have Cocoa with my Tortoiseshell / Calico boy right now. I'm looking for a nice black right now to pair her with.

Miss Diva doesn't mind at the moment.

All these beautiful chocolate silkies!!! I wonder how they came about?? Anyone have any idea what could have crossed together to get them?????

These are Calico colored silkies. The hen is the dead give away. These cannot be salmon because they do not have mahogany color genes, to make it a short explanation.

Update on Swiffer - the Sizzle of unknown color. I entered him at Hollister last week as a lemon-blue & he took 1st & BV. But best of all, the judge wrote "+ type" on the card. I didn't know what that meant but talked to judge after & she was very complimentary. Said Swiffer was excellent type & body shape, which is not often seen on Silkie or Sizzle cockerels. Wow. That meant much more than the ribbon. Guess I'm doing something right. Yea Swiffer! On the minus side, judge didn't know his color either - said she thought he was more a silver-blue. He's entered in the Western Nationals next week as a salmon so still not sure if I should change the color on the card to silver-blue or leave as a salmon. Here's my boy & a couple of Sizzle pullets that I took also. Sorry. I know this is a Silkie thread but since these guys are a Silkie variety I hope you'll forgive me for jumping in. I'm just very proud of how well they are doing.
