Silkies Of A Different Color

hi...I am new to the silkie world, got one the other day by chance...I am already in love with the lil guy...can you tell me what is the best thing to feed him? I have been giving him crack corn and scratch and some treat like stuff that is for parrots...and bread crumbs...but I want him to be healthy so if there is a specific thing they need, I would like to know, thanks in advance!

I would go to your local feed store (Agway / Tractor Supply) and check out the feed section. I'm sure they'll have chicken feed and you can evaluate which is best for your needs. Like if you're raising chickens for meat vs egg production, or just as pets, exetra.

a lot of times they do have an assortment of feed but no knowledge...what do you feed yours?
I feed my birds hen scratch.

My silkies stay in better condition when fed the pellets. They don't seem to get as much out of the whole grains as our other chickens do, so I use either crumbles or pellets. I use a combo of scratch, gamebird conditioners and pellets for our free range birds, but stick mostly to the pellets with only a small handful of grain as a treat, for the silkies.

My Silkies all get an all flock or game bird type feed with oyster shell on the side. They don't lay as much as production breeds, so I'm figuring it would be best to let them control their own calcium intake. I get those weird looking sandpaper eggs when I give them layer (which only happens if the feed store doesn't have what I need). Obviously a rooster won't be laying any eggs, so he doesn't need any added calcium. Good luck!
