Asking this for a good friend, because I'm still pretty lousy with color genetics.
She thinks these are a cross between her buff hen and low-white blue paint roo.
Obviously this one LOOKS like a silver partridge right now (is it even possible to look like this from that cross? maybe another culprit was involved?), but any ideas what colors she might expect from that cross?
What do you mean by white blue-paint roo? Is he a blue paint? When you start mixing up colors, its hard to say what the end result will be. You just have to wait and see.
This pullet looked a lot like the chick in your pics as a baby
It reminded me of her! Anyway, I don't think I was much help, but the chicky is adorable!
Yes, the roo is a blue paint. By low-white, I assume she means he's a paint with more color on him than white, which is unusual for paints.
I've had silver partridges, like the gal in your pic, myself which is how I recognized this baby looking like one now, I just don't know how that's possible to get from her combination. Thought some genetic gurus might know the genes at work there and have an idea what could come of that cross.
Well, paint is dominant white (Silkies are usually recessive white) with pigment holes. I would think the dominant white would try to mask other colors if he were a paint, but I'm not sure how the pigment holes would play into that.
Is it possible her rooster is actually a very well marked splash? A splash and buff could produce partridge if the genetics are there to do it, and I'd think the possibility for blue partridge or something similar would be higher with that pairing, but just about anything can happen when you start mixing things up.
