So, I recently bought 4 silkies off of a local who said that 2 were from a hatchery (the all white roo and hen) which are 1 year; and two he bred himself which are brother and sister who are 6 months (the tri roo and black and white hen). The white hen and rooster do not have ANY feathering on their legs what so ever, and the rooster seems to be a bit big. However they have black/blue skin, five toes etc. The Black and white hen and tri-colored rooster have feathered feet, blue skin, five toes etc, I'm just not familiar with their markings on silkies. I'm new to silkies, the ones I have are currently 3 months (a black and a blue) and 3 weeks (2 white and a silver partridge) so I'm not sure what to look for. But the roosters have 2 totally different types of combs, and comb color as well. I'm convinced that some are mixed, I'm just not sure which, or if any....someone help please!

*Oh, I just noticed I do not have any good ones of my white hen, though she is identical to my large white rooster, comb and all! (just smaller) She lays though, so she is indeed a hen :)

Here is three of the four

They're mixed. It looks like the white bird has actual silkie feathers? The rest are hard feathered. Silkie feathering is recessive, so if you cross a silkie to anything else you lose the silkie feathering.

Now that you've found us, feel free to post pics here of birds you're contemplating buying. We can guide you on if a bird is what it's claimed to be.

there are several active silkie threads going in the "breeds, genetics and showing" section, those folks are a world of information also!

Thank you very much! I was thinking that they were mixed. Now the older ones, the white silkie/mixed hen and rooster are from cackle hatchery. Supposedly. I wouldn't think they would mix them at a hatchery would they? Or do you think just the two six month olds are mixed. What concerned me about them (the white rooster and hen) was their lack of feathering on their feet, well, there is none actually. All my silkies that I've had so far have feathering, ranging from a mass amount of feathering to very little, none the less they all have some.
