SILKIES ~ Updated pics on page17

I have my first three purebred Silkies right now and think they are just the silliest looking things I've ever seen. The blue is my favorite. She or he is going to be gorgeous as an adult, and isn't doing too badly now in that department. The two black ones though just look silly and scruffy. Hoping they grow into something fuzzier.

Here they are at around 3 months:

I have a Silkie mix that's supposed to hatch out 5 duck eggs for me this weekend, yay!! Don't have a picture of her on this computer but she's scruffy and silver with turquoise ears!

More than likely if you got then from a feed store you do not have bearded sikies, which are most likely the pics your seeing of the ones you cant see the eyes. I have both and had to seek out my bearded from breeders. The ones I got from the feed store are regular. And when I first started, I was the same way as you. But one day when I was at the feedstore they had gotten some in and I got ONE on a spur of the moment decision. I went back up a few hours later and got two more. And now I have 8! Oh yeah! I'm hooked! The bearded do seem to be more cuddly and dog like than unbearded though. My wife has taken to a little splash that she carries everywhere! When they are free ranging, if she comes out it runs up to her and wants up on her lap. We also have a big black roo that thinks all the little ones are his and gets alittle pecky with you when they are around AND at night he sits on them and spreads his wings over them and pecks at you if you reach for them. AND we only got him 2 days ago! they introduce into new flocks pretty good.

Will you post some pics of your 'feedstore' birds, so I can get an idea of the poof...LOL Thanks

Sure! I just will have to find them, or better yet I will try to get some updated ones today!

I saw a show on public television last night called 'The History of Chickens'. It was great! The last story was about a silkie named Liza that a preacher owned. Apparently he witnessed the hen throw herself between her babies, and a hawk that was attacking. He went outside expecting the worst, but Liza's fluff must've fooles the hawk, and it only skimmed her. He was just blown away by the sacrifice this simple chicken was willing to make for her babies.

OMG!!! One of the reasons I got silkies was because of Liza and her babies. Of course I was ready to hunt down the preacher for not running outside and chasing the hawk away.

I was balling like a baby watching that show, thinking "don't stand and watch, save her." Loved the part about headless Mike, too.

I said the same thing about the preacher-guy standing there while Liza was attacked. I'da been out there swinging something and hollering... Yeah headless Mike was just weird! I've heard of him before, but never seen pictures before last night. I just ordered 5 silkies myself, yesterday.

I got 2 white ones the end of February and 2 partridge the end of March. They're soooo sweet!

I got a kick out of the lady who lived with the white silkie. My son and I were joking that they were married because she did everything with that bird!!

I wish i'd seen that show- here are my babies- they get upset if they don't have the teddy blanket to sleep in...
