SILKIES ~ Updated pics on page17

If one is a roo and the other a pullet...when they are let out to free range with the other two pullets (a buff orpington & a barred rock) will the rooster have his silkie girl as a favorite and/or will he 'adopt' the big girls too and have a flock of three gals???

What is the standard behavior of silkie roosters?

Any chance a silkie rooster has a quieter crow??? (or any less rooster like behaviors...give me some selling points to pitch to the hubby, just incase I have a roo on my hands)

I think their eyes just look bigger because they're all black.

I just discovered my 7 wk old buff silkie is growing wattles the same mulberry color as his comb. Does that mean for sure it's a roo? Do female hatchery silkies grow wattles at 7 wks?

My black silkie who is the same age still has a flat black comb. Not raised at all and no wattles. Does that mean it may be a hen or slow to develop?

Sorry, that's going to be your roo. Mine did the same thing at 7 weeks, he started crowing this week.

I was told by someone that their silkie roo's crow was more like a BURP....

Hope this is true if my silkie turns out to be a roo too!

Oh, and i am SOOO glad they are growing on you!!! I knew they would!

I am wondering what mine is....got 'her' from Shay.

I have no idea how to tell, I think she's about 9 weeks??? We live in the city and really need her to be a girl! Like I said, if not hopefully HE'll just BURP! lol

This is her (Monkie) with Nellie our 5.5 week old light brahma gal.

Here's some closer up photos....maybe I will post this on breed/gender...but while we are on the topic of silkies here and hen vs. roo- anyone's guess is welcome. I figure we could all learn how to 'tell' from someone who has mastered this....

Yeah, its pretty much been confirmed that for its age it shouldnt be showing any 'symptoms' of being male (ha ha I say it like being male is a dreaded disease) LOL, anyway majority rules over at the 'what breed/gender' section that mine is a roo-boy.

Gosh thats going to make things difficult....but I still love her/him.

So apparently if your chick looks like this at 9 weeks like mine, its a MALE!!!

Has anyone else had a chick look like this and wind up female?

A good friend of mine told me that if their fluff on top is growing back it's a roo, if it's growing forward it's a female. The comb on yours is s dead giveaway and his fluff looks like it's growing back. If I think of it I'll take pics of my silkies to show you.
