Silkies VS Other Chickens (what are the differences)

If you have an asian market in your area there is a good chance you can find silkies in the freezer case with more delicacies. You can examine them through the package and see the black skin color, etc.
 
You really have to watch them for mites on their head. Most of mine do not get mites on their body, but on the top of the head. I am sure it is due to the easy access of blood from lacking a full skull. Poor things and with black skin, they are harder to see.
I have a few that can jump pretty high, but they do not fly. I have only had one that was able to roost like the other chickens.
 
Awww you guys! Why'd you have to start this thread...I am so going through 'chick' withdrawls and have been wanting silkies forever but no new babies until we are in the new house (probably a month) and that is just NOT fair!

I would like more info on silkies also. My kids want one or seven they said. I told them I would look into the idea. We live outside Madison Wisconsin, can they stand a cold winter? I also let my other chickens day-range. How many eggs do they lay?
