My big Silkie Baby started brooding again. She does this once every other month, both her and her sister brood often. The only problem is, we don't have a rooster and she seems to always sit on the nest without eggs (we have three available nests for the chickens) so there's no logical reason why she should be brooding right now. I know the normal ways to break a brooding chicken since she does this all the time but is there anything I can do for "problem chickens" who absolutely insist on brooding as often as possible?

Hello.. No...Other than selling and spreading the joy of broody Hens....Nothing you can do...I have one Silkie cross and she is relentless...Hatched out 3 clutches this year and was Broody again...I broke her the last time and times between ...She was acting up yesterday again so I have my fingers crossed she was just laying on eggs and not about to begin again....

Unfortunately, that is just what silkies do! That is one reason I keep several in my flock. I can always count on one of them going broody at any given time that I can use to raise some chicks, they make the best moms too!

Silkies brood. It's just part of their DNA. Can't do anything about it. And as you have learned, hens don't need a rooster and they don't need piles of eggs sitting around to go broody. A hen that is prone to brooding will do so, no matter what.
