forgive me for double posting-I posted in breeds genetics and showing but I thought this is probably the better place to post

So do any normal hatcheries sell quality silkies. I have a silkie that came from a hatchery and she’s horrible looking scraggly and not very fluffy in body or head. I had two beautiful silkie hens that someone abandoned on my door they were so much different then my hatchery silkie…so I was wondering if they came from a different hatchery or what(no way to tell I know). I’m no silkie expert by any means but I’ve seen some beautiful birds on here did any of them come from hatcheries or are most from private breedings.

If you want pretty silkies go to a breeder. Try going to a local show (fair but preferably APA show) and see if a breeder might have any culls to sell as pets

You probably won't get really good quality silkies from a hatchery. Because all they breed for is quantity and not the beautiful qualities in silkies. You should definitly look for a breeder online or at a local show

I’ve got someone I’m getting a few hatchery silkie chicks from in a few days. I was just wondering if they where going to be (for lack of a better term) ugly too. I just was wondering why hatcheries sell such poor quality silkies, I understand egg layer types being poor quality they are breed for egg production not breed standards, but what else would you want a silkie for if not looks…not eggs that’s for sure, and I’m sure they don’t breed for sweet temperaments on such a large scale.

If you HAVE to have them as chicks, which means you don't know if they will end up SQ or not, try Bobby Porto. Next spring you could also try Amy Jo Piehl, but I believe she isn't hatching any more this winter.

If you are fine with adults, there are some silkies on http://www.bidbirdauctions.com/ or contact specific breeders with birds you admire and see what they might have available this fall.

I 'm having a hard time as well. No one in my county would sell any to me because they didnt want me to show against them. ( my kids show 4-h ) so we found someone in a different county and were getting them in the spring from her. I found her on byc site...

I live up here in MN and shut the incubator off on Aug. 1st. I'll start it up again after Christmas again. Snow starts flying in October and it would mean alot of young stock in the house all winter. I'd rather get through the show season and holidays before worrying about cleaning brooders. Next spring it will depend on the weather.... I can start shipping young stock when it gets above over 30 degrees and chicks when its at least 60 or so. Definitely give Bobbi a call.... She has really nice birds and the FL climate allows hatchign year round. Amy
