Silkies

Ours are growing up. They are enjoying getting to go outside. We have sticks in their brooder for them to perch on, but they don't. One night we forgot to put them back in after cleaning their home out, and they peeped incessantly. When we placed their "perches" back in they stopped peeping and calmed down. But they still haven't tried to perch on them yet. Isn't this strange?

I have noticed with my babies, they do not like change as well.! I put a towel under the waterer because they are so messy, and they were quite upset. After a while, they calmed down...lol Now, they are used to it being there.

I took them on their outing into the yard yesterday. They loved it! Went crazy foraging. I could tell when they were tired and ready to go back into the brooder. :) Here is a couple pics.

Our rooster sleeps on a perch, but our hen often just sleeps on a nest box. Our little buff silkie even sleeps on a perch. They don't like to be on the ground, because all the other chickens are on perches, so they just sleep on a really low one.

I have one lack and one blue Silkie in with 3 Golden Comets and 3 Speckled Sussex. So far everyone seems happy. I'm thinking the black one may be a roo. They are about a week and a half to two weeks old and although they get along with the other chicks and vice-versa the black one sometimes will get a wee bit bossy. It also is the LEAST happy about being picked up. Its wing feathers seem a bit wilder than the blue one's and there seems to be a pretty fancy tail coming in too.

They are a fun breed so far. If the black one is a roo is it likely to be a problem with the others in the same coup/run?

All the chicks are about the same age...week and a half give or take a few days. I think I see tiny combs developing on all of them. Am I right about that or is that just sort non-feather skin or something?

:)

Their feet have nothing to do with roosting or perching. The fact that they can't fly well (they can hop-flapflap a little) is why they can't/won't roost unless the perch is set low enough to hop up onto. My 7 and 8 week old Silkies will indeed, roost right beside the big, cowlike EasterEggers and other bigger birds :D
