Yes it takes a LONG time to sex a silkie. You usually don't know until just about laying age for sure.
But MAN are they worth having. I'm so in love with my silkies that's all I have or want. I have 1 White, 2 Black and 2 Buff. One of my buff's is a Roo and still hasn't crowed at 15 weeks.
They are all such babies... like little lap dogs. The best part, they are great with my 19 month old. She can carry them around and pet them... and they won't peck her since they were hand raised from chicks. (Except my 2 black ones who had no human contact until I took them, and they are now sweet as can be only after a couple month.)
Good choice of bird.

A while ago I called about there silkie chicks (I couldnt find ANYTHING around here) had ordered some chicks from a breeder in WA and ALL the chicks ended up dieing from ILT (or had to be culled) !!!!! Anyway, so I called them to get more "info" on there chicks !!!! A friend of mine was going to take a few also so I asked if they could mark the rooster they told me they could for $10.00, She (the girl at mypetchicken) was telling me that if I got more than the one rooster I wanted to call and let them know, they would either send me more chicks (as long as there was enough) or refund my money !!!! I asked the same question you did !!!!! And she said yes.... In the end I never ended up getting any from them (not fond of what the hatchery silkies look like or the quality, and finally found a breeder up this way) So....... Thats just what they told me !!!! Who knows, I was surprised also !!!!!! seems like everyones told different from thoses places... I do know that there was a 6-7 month wait for chicks !!!

Good luck finding any this time of year. We have been looking high and low and there just aren't any quality silkies out there right now. If someone knows differently, PLEASE LET ME KNOW!!! Thanks

To break it down for myself. Silkie than serama(2nd only because they don't tolerate cold). both are fantastic with children or adults. Beautiful birds(?) kind of remind me of rabbits that lay eggs. They are very quiet and gentle(and tolerant of halloween costumes). Buy the adults or hatch breeder eggs like I did. You really won't regret it.
