Silkies????

Thank you for the tip!!! I will go my pet chicken's website now. I'm afraid we must have hens. we have 20 chickens where the limit is 3, and since roos are too loud, they'd give the game away. However, if you will breed for me a rooster that will not crow, then I will be happy to get them!

what colors are the most beautiful??? what do you suggest- black, white,buff or splash??? I was thinking about the black ones, but I don't know for sure.

We will be ordering them next spring, because fall weather is so unpredictable. Last year, there was a cold snap during our shipping, and several died.

Hey All,

At what age will silkie hens go broody? I have a 6 wk old that was motherly to 4 day old cochin and frizzle the second she met them. She even tried to shove them under her chest. The sweetest thing. I have eggs that I can put in bator, but would love to give her a couple to lay on since she obviously WANTS to!

i wouldn't put any good eggs that I really wanted to hatch under a silkie until she was setting tight, not budging and pecking my hand if I reached under her. I would think a silkie would not go truly broody until she at least laid an egg, but I am new to chickens this year, and as ready to learn as the next guy. Six weeks old seems VERY unlikely to set and stay there three weeks and hatch an egg. I have had week old chicks behave like you describe with day old chicks, hooking them under them with their beaks, looks like they are trying to protect them. Mine that I saw do that are bantam cochins, another variety known for strong mothering instincts.

Mine just went broody almost two weeks ago for the first time, she is 7 mo old. On Sunday she laid an egg and was on it, on Monday when I opened the hatch she went out with everyone else so I thought she was done and took her egg, she went back after eating, drinking and pooing and stayed there all last week other than in the mornings when they were let out and she'd do her thing and go back so last Friday I gave her egg back to her...She's not going anywhere. She is my very first broody and she is the sweetest broody, never pecks me but she fluffs even more than she already is if thats possible trills/growls at me when I pet her but doesn't budge.

Wow...they are so cool. Didn't know how much I would like them until I got this little girl.
What is the "average" age for laying or going broody? My Seramas are EARLY developers and that's all I personally have to go off of. My hens layed their first fertile eggs with the previous breeder at 3 months old!
He incubated, not expecting much, but as a sort of "test", and out came 3 babies!

Oh and thank you very much swtangel321 for mentioning that MPC has silkies. I only want a few of them (in the spring) and knew I couldn't get them from the other hatcheries in a small quantity!
