Sure, there are two perfectly good nest boxes over there, but let’s squabble over this milk crate instead. Note: One of these chickens (the brown) is not even laying currently, as far as I know.

Have you ever witnessed a small crowd of people appearing to draw more people to investigate what the big deal is? That's the way hens are with an occupied nest. I've even seen my roosters drawn into the crowded nest.

Chickens aren't terribly unlike humans in wanting to be where the action is.
