Silver Appleyard Ducks

I sold mine to a woman who has "hobby" ducks. Kept my two whites for breeding. Ironically, I had a Saxony that hatched pure white. (Sold her to the same woman).

We keep our darks, they butcher well.

This is an interesting discussion, especially since my pair of silver apples are darker. I wanted to chime in that Holderread charges less for pure white silver apples, but the dark colored babies are full price. I would think that if DH considered the dark colors to not be up to standards, he would have them discounted like the pure whites?

I wanted to keep mine just to see what kind of babies I would get. An "experiment" of sorts.. but I don't have room for all my experiments. So I had to let her go. lol. It is interesting though.

QJ, how many SAs did you keep? Still hoping to egg swap with you in the fall, assuming my younger duckling is a boy and I have a mate for my girl.

Glad I found this thread. Now I know how to select keepers of this breed. Hubby bought me hatching eggs... again.

If I sell the dark ones at pet quality, I'm not deceiving anyone, right?

Utah: 2 females and a male. They are fast becoming my favs of the group. They are so pretty! And HUGE. They eat a LOT. I'm hoping for eggs in a few weeks.

Quackerrs: Yay for eggs! Wish my hubs would buy me a few. ;) I explained the woman that bought mine that she was Pet quality and why I was selling her.

I Picked up my part of the NH/VT Silver Appleyard Duck Preservation Project today...
7 ducklings became "back seat drivers" all the way home. Two are mine and the other 5 go to another person interested in this rare breed of duck. Anyone know how to sex 7 day old ducklings? Beak color? These ducks are my "weapons of mass destruction" on garden snails... Fortunately, I found this NH/VT Appleyard Preservation Project and they will be my front line against pests in the garden. As soon as my coop is built I will reserve a few more. The ducklings are free. Limited supply. "
Hey... I also stopped by and picked up 3 from the late Apr hatch (all 3 are light phase). Are you on the Motherduck Yahoo group? (I don't plan on doing the Facebook group she's starting, and I think a breed club may be in order, as she's really focused on the Northeast, and having them raised as pets more so to get breed visibility out there). I'm about an hour east of Hanover/W.Leb in NH (maybe we could meet in W. Leb and trade off some ducklings in person next year)... I'm also trying to get a swap of some hatching eggs for some additional S.A.'s, so, I can let you know how that hatch goes...
Nice to meet you!
