silver laced wyandotte

Good info thanks guys. It can get really hot here where I am too, but usually it's over 100 for a week or so and then it drops back down.

Mine were an impulse buy at the feed store

They grew up to be beautiful egg layers. We have heat here too 100 plus for most of Aug. they made it thru just fine ?? As I said for friendly ,very, every night we would go out and lead a parade of chickens and horses back to the barn. SLW would come running from where ever ? They run like little old ladies who pick up their petticoats and sprint !

I have one SLW in my flock of nine that I ordered from mypetchicken.com and she is a very cool hen. She is laid back and doesn't boss anyone around nor does she get bossed around. As for her laying, she lays the smallest egg out of my flock and she lays cream colored eggs. Very light in color compared to my RIRs eggs but she is a daily layer so no complaints from me.

SLW are great looking birds with very calm personalities. Much calmer than Leghorns or EE's.

They will be ALPHA hens. My SLW even kicked my Roo's butt when they were introduced. She is still Alpha and he has been moved down the hierachy.

I am on the fence on wether I will keep mine because of their strong need to be boss of the other chickens. My alpha hen is very submissive to people - - she is not mean to us, but LORDY does she rule the roost.

I am hoping she will be a GREAT Mother with all those bossy instincts, so I am going to wait and see what happens when she goes broody. If she turns out to be the moma that I think she will be - - - she will be a keeper. IF not, then I think I would like to try another "Pretty" breed like the SPECKLED SUSSEX.

Wyandottes are so beautiful. I have buffs and they are great chickens. They started to lay at a very young age and are still laying at over 3 years old. My only problem is my rooster. His name is Wally and he has always been treated really well, along with my other chickens. His problem is his aggressive behavior. It started at the age of 9 months when he started pecking at my shoes when I walked into the coop. Within a month or so, you really had to watch yourself around him. I just thought this was a fluke until I spoke to a friend who had a silver pencilled wyandotte rooster that attacked his children. I was wonderfing if this aggression is a trait of wyandotte males? I have had many breeds of chickens, but I don't know too many people with wyandottes, it is just both the roosters I know have been like that. I control his behavior by picking Wally up and holding him while I walk around, doing my chores. He really doesn't like being held and he runs away from me when I put him down. This "cure" only lasts a day or two and he is back to his old behavior and I have to do it again. I wish there was a way I could communicate that I mean him (and his hens) no harm and that I would appreciate the same from him. He is the head rooster and none of the other males are aggressive.. They include light brown leghorns, a white orpington and a New Hampshire.

I currently have three SLWs and they are lovely. They are great in cold weather because they are very fluffy and if you let them free range they get themselves quite fat haha. Mine are pretty calm, a little flightier than my Rhode Island Reds. They're great layers for the most part. Oh and another advantage is they have rose combs so their combs won't freeze off in the winter.
