TL;DR: cockerels or pullets? Also: can your share photos of 4-5 week old SL Wyandott cockerels?
A month ago, we got 4 new chicks from the feed store. Two were labeled Ameraucanas & two SL Wyandotte; supposedly they were all a day old, but the alleged Ameraucanas were probably closer to a week or two. I’m less sure about the Wyandottes. In any event, they’re all about 4-6 weeks old. The Ameraucanas are obviously Easter Eggers, though what that means is less clear.
About 2 days after we brought them home, the EE sprouted tail feathers & the Wyandottes sprouted RED combs. Red. Both developments startled me — I’ve only ever been around RIRs & Dominiquesand this is only the 3rd time I’ve personally raised chicks anyway. I don’t ever remember red combs OR tail feathers in week 1. I immediately started googling, and I’ve been fixated on the idea that my Wynandottes are roosters ever since. I think think I forgot that was a possibility?
I’ve spent so much time looking up everything ever written about sexing Wyandottes, but I more or less ignored the EEs, as everything about them pointed to pullet in the beginning, plus, who even knows what they’re meant to look like? They recently grew feather crests…still naught but the tiniest yellow crown… That having been said, I took some photos today, and looking at them…I’m really not sure anymore.
I feel like I’ve lost all ability to distinguish between roosters and hens of any age. I would love input on these photos, and I would also love to see photos of YOUR Silver Laced Wyandottes at a similar age, as well as info on whether they grew into roosters or hens. I’m especially keen to see more 4-5 week old cockerels.
