Silver Pheasant Breeding Question

Updating that my male silver is with 2 IB peafowl and 2 guineas currently. I beleive that I am going to go and get him 2 hens in early January.

I've got the male Silver in a seperate aviary now. It's all set up for breeding. I am getting the 2 hens for him in the next 2 weeks. From what I've gathered the hens will make a nest in the xmas tree I have in the corner. I also hae areas with cedar boughs overhanging to create darker areas. Am I doing this right? Thanks.

I would leave him in with the peafowl until you get your hens.Put your hens in the new pen first and then add the male.If you put him in there now,and put the hens in when you get them.Hens or males he will kill them.If you put him in now,he will establish the pen as his domain, anyone even hens that threaten on his domain will pay.Put the hens in 1st add him and nobody has extablished the pen.As for nesting boxes, give them choices, trees, baskets pile of brush, and they will choose what they feel fit.

Hi Tony,
Thanks for your reply. I will leave him with the peafowl for now.
I just had a phone call this second and the hens are actually on their way over to my house now. How long until they should start breeding?
I will go and take him out of the aviary in a minute. How long should I leave the hens in the aviary before add my male?
Thanks.

They will be starting their mate search in the the next month, and breeding will take place in Feb or earlier depending on you climate. You can add the male as soon as the hens are in there, but keep an eye on them.He may get a little frisky when he see's girls in the picture.
About the cedar,I know you are not to use cedar shavings,so I am worried abouit anything cedar in their pen.Cedar has a toxic something that pheasants and other poultry should avoid.

Okay. I will add him after the hens are in there. Do you think it will make a difference that he had already been in there for a while? I will take out the cedar. There is alot of other branches I use.

I've heard once you take a bird out of one pen and put him in another, that they don't remember anything.I don't know how anyone can prove this.If you move things around it may help him to forget he's already been here.I've added a pic of my lewis silver pair. They are sorta reverse of the true silvers with black feather with white outlines.Click on pic to enlarge.

So my "American Silvers" as I call them since I don't know the ancestry, (I am sure they are just a mixed subspecies group) were caught mating today. I saw the male doing his wing whirring then displaying like crazy before the hen crouched down and he mounted her a couple times. Since I haven't ever paid much attention to this kind of thing, does this mean that they will be laying eggs soon or are they like any other animal in the way they mate whenever and just lay in season? They are in a bare bones winter pen right now so not really set up at all for breeding/laying.

Well, last night I got a phone call saying the person I was buying my silver hens from was coming into town that night. Well, he called back 3 hours later saying that he just sold them to someone else!!!

I can't beleive he did this. I was even going to pay him extra because he had a bit of a drive. It just really bothers me because I had said I was going to buy them 3 months ago, and was waiting for a day that worked for him. All of a sudden someone comes to his house offers to buy the hirds, and he sell them!!! I'm just really angy because I can't get hens now until October. There goes this breeding season.
