He's free on Craigs List. I could breed him to my EE girls and hopefully improve their egg production while adding some color. What do you think? The rose comb would be nice for colder weather, too. Any thoughts?
You would need to quarantine him for at least 30-45 days before you turn him out to your hens. They may not like him right off bat but after a few shuffles, they will be ok. Check for mites and lices, deworm him while he is in quarantine. He would need to be far away as possible from your existing birds in case he does have something like CRD or any contagious diseases or worms or lice/mites.
Yes why is he free? Disposition is important too or too old or too aggressive with the hens can be determintal to your flock and as well as yourself. You do not want a roo that is nasty, spurring behind your back, or infertility after incubating so many eggs that there is no viable chick in the egg.
Actually i just put up a free rooster on craigslist. but he already found a new home.
He was very pretty, deseas free (that i know of) young, and one of my favorite roosters but he had to go because he was still learning how to mate and i didnt have the time to wait around for him to learn. but i did let the now new owners know that he was still learning and they where fine with that.
Im from kansas too!
I love my silver spangled hamburg, he is so pretty, I would rather give one away than have my DH put him in the stew pot! Maybe it is a nice rooster that they don't want to butcher!
Here is the ad:
"I have several 3 month old roosters for - Free!. These fellas where part of straight run chicks that I purchased from McMurray hatchery at the end of March. All are very healthy and vibrant. Below is a list of breeds that I have.
*Silver Penciled Hamburg - Beautiful black and while polka-dot plummage with high arching tail.
* Black Rose Comb - Solid black plumage with compact comb. Quite the character and awesome crow.
* White Japenese Bantam - petite rooster with striking red comb.
* Buff Brahma Bantam (three of these fellas) - medium size rooster, Dark Golden Buff color with black highlights and jade green tail. Great for showing."
sounds like something I would do, I had the fancy everything from mcmurray and got a bunch of neat roosters. I wanted to keep them all but ended up keeping my turken, salmon favorelle, and silver spangled hamburg
I placed my Speckled Sussex 'roo for free on Craigslist. He was lovely and quite healthy. I was lucky and got him a home on a milk goat farm with 13 hens!
I actually placed 3 roos on CL and found them a home. They were young, healthy birds, too. So she may just be in the same position I was in; too many roos.
I've been seeing lots of roos on Craigslist in the past few weeks. Is the rooster in the ad a Silver Spangled or Silver Penciled? They do not look exactly the same.
I had a Silver Spangled Hamburg and he was a beautiful bird. He used to sneak up behind me and hit me in the back of my legs but he wasn't really vicious. I would chase him around the yard while tossing my shoe in his direction for a couple of minutes and he would leave me alone for a few weeks
