simple lice remedy? flour?

If it is not Sevin dust it is NOT the same. You want the name brand stuff.

Take a pantyhose and cut the foot out of it. pour in about a cup of dust and tie it off. You are making a powder puff filled pocket. Take each bird and working quickly turn them upside down and they will hold out their wings spread and powder puff them from head to toe. You can do a chicken in under 30 seconds. You need to make sure the powder gets down in the feathers. Just dusting the house and sprinkling it on the chickens will not work.

I disagree with the vet that said it is okay for them to have lice. Lice itch and feed on their flesh residue and the moisture around their vent. Who wants to live with bugs crawling on your flesh? Not even a dog likes to live with fleas. Responsible chicken owner do not let parasites go unchecked. It is VERY unhealthy for the chickens.

Lice infestations lead to hens plucking feathers - their own and others. being miserable can lead to weight loss and general all around poor healthy and quality of life.

I would not eat nor give or sell eggs or meat to someone from a chicken that is infested with lice, mites or worms. That is totally not good and why people have the idea that backyard chickens are filthy animals that spread disease.

LC, get the sevin dust, name brand, it will cost about $5 or less. You will have more than enough to treat the chickens and the house again.

Treat again in 7 days. If the infestation is bad you may have to treat a 3rd time.

yay home depot has it. woot. and one more question for you miss prissy, If i get a kiddy pool and mix the sevin dust with sand for them to dust themselves will that help?

Yes, I do that too. But you have to treat the problem and get rid of it first then use that as a maintenance plan. Fireplace ashes work too in the sand box for them to dust bath in.

Goodluck and happy dusting with your flock.
