Our new little ones are growing like crazy... and wasting food even faster.

We're using a mason jar feeder and they are pulling out the chick starter crumbles like crazy. We usually raise the feeder which helps a little but not enough.

Today after cleaning the brooder I simply set a glass pie bowl under the feeder.

Well, I've done this solution many times in the past, but it finally hit home today how effective it is when only a few hours after filling the feeder I saw this:

That's at least 65% of the feed that otherwise would have gone right into the bedding.

Little buggers!

WOW! That is something I gotta try! My Spitz chicks always like to fling everything out of the feeder and it gets expensive after while.

Looks like you have proved what we all suspect and some of us know happens, 65% WOW!!!.

I found that to work too but then I did some more work. I slit a toilet paper roll lengthwise and cut it in half (well, about 2" long). I adjust it in the metal part, up or down to allow more or less feed in the feeder.

The way it is originally set up the feed is to the top of the holes. This way it is down in the bottom of the feeder.
