just got my first chicks this morning. tried the toilet paper roll thing and it's working great. Haven't seen them throw out one piece yet. In fact i've been sprinkling crumbles in the brooder so they have something to do . They seem to enjoy looking around for it.
 
The pie plate is a great idea. I will definately put this idea to use when I get my new babies next month. I hate the waste the little ones make.
