Simulated Natural Nest Incubation~Experiment #1 So it begins....

I came home to no electricity today. 50º in the house 60º in the incubator. The chick that hatched yesterday? Was laying in the bottom of the incubator looking very dead. When I picked her up she moved her wing! Just a little but the wing moved. So I stuffed her in my bra while I found a plastic container to fill with warm water. When the container was full I decided I didn't want to get her wet since it was still cold in the house. So I put her in a plastic bag, lowered her into the warm water. In five minutes she was chirping. After the electricity was back on and the incubator was warm again I put her in the incubator. Now 2 hours later she is moving around and peeping happily!

Tough little jokers!

What happens now to the other eggs? This electric is a dodgy thing, isn't it? One reason I don't like to depend on it much.

Mirandazmail: That pic of the BA/BO hen is beautiful. It makes me all the more anxious to see what my mutts turn out like. I'm looking forward to raising a flock of cold hardy birds full of hybrid vigor, and am breeding for pea or rose combed birds.

Hello Linda,

Welcome to Bee's forum. I'm glad to see that you are pumped about the new chickens....we all know what you mean. I have 6 Dominique laying hens, 1 Dominique rooster and 1 New Hampshire Red laying hen. (I have to keep this one separate due to the roo is hell bent on killing her! I even kept her in a caged off area, that is in the coop with all the rest so they could see each other and eat side by side....to no avail) Roo roo just can not stand her...I guess because she is red and all the others are Dominique colored.

Good Luck with your new flock!
