Just read about an experiment BYC did about using reflective tinfoil in the nest boxes and how it increased the broodiness of their hens by 48%, so, of course, I have got to try this.

Or it could be their version of an April Fools joke.......

LOL.. I'll have to check it out....that's too funny, May be an April fools joke, the whole tinfoil thing is just to funny, but then stranger things have happened , this thread is testament to that lol.

I know! That's why it really caught my eye and I was excited...because stranger things have happened and I LOVE a good experiment...but as you read further about the hormones, etc. you realize that someone is yanking yer chain.

You know what would be really funny? If someone went ahead and tried this and got several broodies out of doing it!

Now, I read that study, and couldn't wrap my head around some of the details of it, especially talking about estradiol being excreted in the feathers and reflected back by the tinfoil... So, if it is an April fool's hoax, it's a mean one!! But, wouldn't it make sense that the tin foil would reflect some light, even in a fairy dark nest box, and perhaps the angle of that lighting might trick the hen's body into thinking it's later in the season than it really is??? Also, if anyone does try this, I'd recommend that you cover that foil with some heavy plastic to keep the hens from eating it. I'm not sure how tin foil in the diet affects broodiness.

I saw that article on Facebook, then quickly realized it was April 1st. I was like "Really? That sounds... weird. How would that work? Ooooh.. never mind."

I'm going to try this whole tinfoil experiment on my flock and see if I can pop a broody before these chicks are hatched....anyone else want to try this? It sure would be cool to have a mama to brood these chicks for me.

Why shucks, those folks could paint the ENTIRE enterior of their chicken house with reflective silver paint. That should at least kill any hibernating mites!!
