My 2nd white leghorn started laying on the 12th and has laid an egg every day since. 4 of the 5 eggs have been dented on one end.
It is almost as though they shoot out so fast they are breaking on impact (ahahaha). I have the box full of shavings but the girls make a big cleared out spot in the middle when they want to lay, so it is usually right on the wood bottom. The rest of the egg is not brittle or thin, so I dont think it is a calcium issue. They are on layer mixed with game bird starter (some molters in the bunch) and have free choice oyster shell. My other white leghorn started laying August 1st and has not had this problem at all. Actually this is the only way to tell their eggs apart!
Is there anything else I can do avoid cracked eggs? I added extra shavings and they still just throw out what they don't want. Short of making the front and back walls taller to avoid this, not sure what to do?
I tried hay and they just eat it. What else could I use? Or can I put a "pad" so to speak on the bottom of the box, under the shavings? Anything?
