So I am getting ready to start construction on at least one new aviary. The problem is my imagination is getting too big and after finding a video on youtube of an amazing tropical parrot aviary, I went crazy with ideas for aviaries I probably won't be able to have anytime soon, if at all... Most of the aviary sketch designs I have are too complicated and large and while that is fun to think about possibly doing someday, right now I just need a new pen before breeding season....

I have the location selected. It is going to be right next to my current aviary. I was wondering about blinds though...I noticed some people put up tin so that the peafowl in a neighboring pen can't see the ones next to them, but some people have it so that all the peafowl can see each other even if they are in seperate pens. I don't want them pacing the fence...I guess I will just have to see what happens... We already have some fencing I just need to buy some netting for the top. I guess I also need to build some shelter for them....

Here is the area I am planning on building the new aviary. I don't know the measurements yet but I took Peep out of the pen so that he could be a size reference...

We would leave the plants that are there. One is a plum tree and the bush is a blueberry bush. We were also thinking about including the large green bushes because when I free-ranged my first peafowl they liked to hide in those bushes and also I could see it being a great place for a peahen to nest.

Now Peep will kindly give you an idea of how much space this is. There is plenty enough for an adult peacock to display.

Here are just some plant photos of my current aviary...
The clumping bamboo has come a long way since it was when I first got it when it was three little small canes. It is growing through the netting and I love it! I might plant some bamboo in the new aviary...

This is where all of the plants that the peafowl will eat go. If I get a new plant I put it in their pen in the pot for a few days to see if they eat it up. If they eat on it then I take it out of the pen and plant it on the side of the pen far enough that they can't reach through and grab it. If they don't eat it up I take it out of the pot and plant it. They will definately tear up bananas, although there is a breeder who kept bananas in her young peachick pen without problems. Each bird has a different taste. Some will eat more of your plants than others. With the bananas, one of the leaves is very close to the pen and Peep likes to reach through the fence and eat on the leaf. I guess if you had a large enough banana and you planted it in the pen that might work. In the winter around here just the leaves die off of the banana and the trunk stays intact. Anyways I am always experimenting to see what plants the peafowl will not touch and which ones they will. They are finally starting to eat on the cast iron in their pen which is upsetting. I am thinking the whites are to blame. They eat just about anything. Also, the peas will eat pink flower pettals but not white flower pettals...I tried that experiment today...

Hopefully I will eventually update this topic with photos of building the new aviary and stuff....I really need to pick a day to start building....

Wow that will be a great aviary.

I am also going to build one, but for my small cage birds. I have gouldain, zebra and star finches, zebra, ringneck and turtle doves, and quail. I am sick of tending to them each in their own cages. I will make a large aviary and mix them all together. The aviary will include real palms and bushes for them to perch on.

Its always exciting making new aviaries.

I see in your profile you are native American. What part of America do your ancestors come from? Do you follow any of your original traditions? I am really interested in different cultures. I live in Thailand and in my area we have a lot of different Hill Tribes. They are fascinating to visit (the real ones, not the ones for tourists).

Good luck with you aviary and Peacocks.

Yes that is what the person on youtube mentioned about his parrots...He made a large greenhouse aviary so that he didn't have to deal with them all being in seperate cages and he wouldn't have to worry about cleaning the poop as much. He ended up having to rotate his birds though because some of them don't get along so one day he has his macaws out and another day he has smaller parrots out, etc.

I am super excited about a new aviary. After you make one, you get ideas of what could be better so that for the next one you can make it even better or more sturdier or something.

Yes I am Native American.

I am not full Native American, my Grandma is a full blood. Our ancestors are generally from this area (Florida). Our family goes back very far to this area, in fact just today we met some more of our relatives. They were a bit distant relatives but we are related to a lot of people around here. We are several kinds of Native American. I mainly tell people I am Creek Native American from the Wind/Long Hair clan. That was the ruling Creek clan. We are related to some well known Native American chiefs.... Red Eagle, Alexander Mcgillivray, etc. My dad said we are related to about all of the big chiefs. Our band of Creeks were ones that were not captured by white people. Our ancestors fled into the swamp and when my father was a boy his family didn't like to talk about their heratige for fear that it would get them caught. They wore big sun hats to keep from getting dark in the sun so they would look like white people. We do not exactly belong to a tribe right now, but we do talk to the head chief of all tribes that we consider to be the chief of the Seminole tribe. We talk with him a lot. My dad is big into hunting and everything he kills we use just about everything from that. We don't buy burger from the store we eat deer meat and my dad uses the bones to make knife handles, among other things. Our living room has lots of Native American things, most were made by my dad, some of them I have painted designs on. We mainly have a lot of war clubs. My dad has made a few of those. He also makes knives. Right now he is working on painting deer skulls and I am going to help him with that. We don't do many rituals I would say. There are a few superstitions we might have, like seeing an eagle or a hawk can be a good omen, etc. I do want to get into the dancing though....We go to Pow Wows each year and they always have Native Americans in regalia (the fancy outfits they dance in) dancing and I really want to get involved in that. We also want to learn the language.

Minx, I envy the green banana tree? Or palm tree in your last pic?.And your year around mild climate,,tonight is our first taste of wind, snow, and cold tomorrow night.I'll come down and build your aviary.I like building peafowl housing and confinement.

Haha yeah we are not in the very tropical part of Florida (zone 8b-9a) so we do get some frost here and sometimes the water does freeze a bit, but we don't really get snow or anything. It doesn't get too bad here just the water in the air makes our cold seem colder. Some places have a nice dry cold but here we have more of a wet cold. I just don't like the cold. I like heat better.
Yeah that is a banana. Bananas grow really well around here. There are some hardy bananas you could probably grow. Some people are into zone pushing or zone denial where they plant all sorts of tropicals but in the winter time they dig up the tropicals and store them somewhere until spring or they cover the plants for the winter.
Here is a cool story about a couple in Indiana that have a tropical garden and they are into zone pushing.

I got into plants because of peafowl...I wanted some nice scenery to go with some pretty birds...

If you're into building, I'm much closer, unfortunately also probably much colder.
I'm now suffering from zone envy, love the idea of banana trees and bamboo. Good luck with your build Minx, I know what you mean about the big dreams, I do that as well, start out needing to build for a pair and end up wanting a 24 x 40 with multiple pens that I can't afford. This spring I need to build an isolated pen and run so I have someplace to sequester new purchases away from the crowd.

Haha yep I have to calm myself down and tell myself this is not going to be anything way too elaborate. I have to figure in extra space because I am going to let my peahens hatch out their own peachicks, so enough space to have a few chicks as well....

I like going to the gdwf Aviculture forums every now and then mainly for the aviary designs...Pinola Preserve has some of the best aviaries...Just looking at this topic of their new aviary makes you dream...

They also have some aviary photos on Flickr:

That kind of stuff really makes me dream...That and zoos with huge walk in aviaries.

How is that talking coming along? :lau Go for the gusto. :gig

Haha yeah so far we haven't started construction yet because we have been busy.

Oh, to have the money to be able to build something like that gbwf aviary!
I am ashamed to show what I have built so far!

Yeah some people were saying it is as good or better than zoo quality. I could only dream of something like that!
