Outside of door and the pieces we attached to the house itself so it was flush and we had a way to lock it and mount it

The back - the tongue and groove is smaller than the frame - and also a bit smaller than the opening so that if it gets wet, it will still open

[TLWR]

If you go with tongue and groove boards (the cedar ones anyway), they are rough on the back (I think they are meant for closets). I put about 38923 coats of paint on it so the poop doesn't get stuck on the door. It's not smooth, but at least sealed and much easier to clean with just water pressure.
