I have a Light Brahma hen, Lady Di, who hasn't laid an egg in a year, at least. Her last eggs were marble size and the final egg wasn't even recognizable. I never expected another egg from her. She was retired.

The past three days, Lady Di has been sitting on the nest for a period each day. I thought she was just copying the other hens, pretending.

Tonight I found her on the nest at roosting time. Thinking she was sneaking in there to sleep, like she often does, I scolded her and gently lifted her off the nest. As I placed her on a low perch just below the nest box, a full-size egg rolled out of her onto the floor!

If I hadn't seen it with my own eyes, I would have assumed it was from one of the other hens. Lady Di appeared to be just as shocked as I was!

It was a "water balloon" egg, no shell. But it was an EGG!

Ooh how cute! I have read that they can lay even in the elder years it's just usually few and far between. She just might surprise you with a real egg with a shell and everything some time! Next time you will know if she's sitting she might actually be laying for you! Bless her heart! Thank you for sharing this story!

I think she got herself all pumped up after laying the egg yesterday because she was back on the nest today, trying her best to squeeze out another one! But this time, no egg.

OMG!!! Lady Di did it again! And this time the egg had a shell!

She crawled into the nest box late this afternoon, and a few hours later, I saw her get off the nest and there was the perfect, great, big, beautiful egg!

This is sort of like a grandmother finding out she's pregnant, isn't it?

That's so great! I told you she just might surprise you with a whole egg, shell and all!! Yay!!! I have heard they CAN lay into old age but eggs are few and far between. Let us know if she lays another! ! This is so sweet! Bless her little heart! ♡

I have a 5 year old light brahma that is only laying fart eggs so far this spring. She didn't lay at all last summer/fall.

Will she keep going? Appears so! Lady Di laid her third egg!

A year ago, when Lady Di was five, she laid a series of fart eggs, the final one being unrecognizable as an egg, even a tiny one. I thought that was the signal she was going to retire and quit laying. Now, out of the blue, she has decided to come out of retirement!

Will she stop at three, or is this going to continue? I shall keep you posted!

Congrats Lady Di and azygous.

Any chance of pics, of the bird and the egg.....am curious about light brahmas and their eggs.

Lady Di laid her fourth egg today! I do believe she's on a streak!
Here she is on her nest today. It took her several hours to push out her egg. Serious business. The trophy.
