I have a Light Brahma hen, Lady Di, who hasn't laid an egg in a year, at least. Her last eggs were marble size and the final egg wasn't even recognizable. I never expected another egg from her. She was retired.
The past three days, Lady Di has been sitting on the nest for a period each day. I thought she was just copying the other hens, pretending.
Tonight I found her on the nest at roosting time. Thinking she was sneaking in there to sleep, like she often does, I scolded her and gently lifted her off the nest. As I placed her on a low perch just below the nest box, a full-size egg rolled out of her onto the floor!
If I hadn't seen it with my own eyes, I would have assumed it was from one of the other hens. Lady Di appeared to be just as shocked as I was!
It was a "water balloon" egg, no shell. But it was an EGG!
