We're almost done! Now DH is working on a plan for the roosts. I've read to use 2x4's. I think what I'm seeing is that the chickens stand on the 2" wide part. Okay -- dumb question: why not use 2x2's? It would save wood and be much easier to lift when I'm sweeping out what will sure to be underneath.

We don't have very cold winters here, maybe a week or two of snow, and nighttime temps usually in the 20's-30's in the dead of winter.

Our birds are Buff Orpingtons.

Thank you!

I used 2x2 boards and they worked fine. Granted we live in Central Texas where it only snows every ten years it seems like so I don't have to worry about frost bite to my chickens feet during winter. Hope this helps you.

while fighting for the window seat at night.

Others have mentioned using the 2"x4"s with the long side for roosting. Keep in mind that the actual 2"x4" measurements are 1-1/2" x 3-1/2".

Chickens don't like to hang onto anything as many birds do. They like to gt their feet out flat. This is why it is usually recommended on here to use the wide or 4" side of a 2x4 for a roost. It is true this helps prevent frostbite in cold climates, but they do better and rest better in any climate if they have this wide of an area to perch.
