size question

just as a shelter for night? Or as a coop AND run?

I think the formula was something like 8 sqft per med chicken and 10 sqft per heavy chicken if it's a coop and run at the same time.

So if you have medium size chickens you could house 4.

Our coop/run has similar dimensions (7 by 8 ft.) and we have 6 chickens in there although ideally I would like them to free range during the day at some point.

well 8x4=32

:lol:devided to 4 so you can put

8 chickens.

The general rule of thumb for standard size chickens is 4 sq. ft. per bird for inside coop space. That is actual floor space - don't include the space taken by the feeder, waterer and nest boxes (if that applies). It's 10 sq. ft. per bird for outside square feet (for the run).

It is NEVER wise or fair to the chickens to put the absolute max in there. Especially since you live in Canada I can't imagine that you wouldn't have days where they would have to be locked inside the coop. Having them locked up for even a day and having too many chickens can cause them to start to feather peck. I learned that the hard way and I had the exact amount that the above rule would allow.

I wouldn't put more than 3 chickens in that coop.
