We're just about to dip our toes in, with (we think) three hens to start. They'll join our household of cats, dog, turtle, and bearded dragons with the sole distinction of being the only pets whose eggs we want to eat. We're still in the investigation and planning stage, with work already commenced on converting an existing backyard shed to a chicken coop with attached outdoor chicken run.
We're in San Jose, California, where we can have up to six hens without a permit. I just need to do a little more research on set-back limitations and property/placement restrictions, but at this point, it looks like we're good to go.
Looking forward to getting to know everyone here and joining the growing number of America's amateur private chicken farmers!
