Skin almost torn completely off

This morning I woke up and one of my younger chicks not yet laying got injured, I couldn’t tell how on earth it happened. But the skin is almost torn completely off her thigh. I cleaned her really good with saline, packed it with neosporin and wrapped her. She up an alert, there wasn’t a ton of blood so she’s didn’t lose much. Just curious aside from cleaning her twice a day and keeping her inside if you folks think that she’ll be able to recover? Will she grow her feathers back after her she scans over and grows skin back?

With doing what you are doing, she will recover and grow feathers back. I had a hen who had the meat stripped to the bone on her thigh from a bobcat and she fully recovered. Neosporin is the way to go and you would be amazed at what chickens can recover from.
This hen had the skin ripped off her neck and relocated to one side from a dog attack and it healed but formed a lump of scar tissue. She also had a huge open wound on her back where it almost removed her tail from her body. She fully recovered with cleaning and neosporin.

I’m glad your hen pulled through! She has a huge flap of skin still, I just folded it back on top of her leg and cleaned her all up. She hates getting wrapped so I’m not sure how long she needs to be getting wrapped. How did you handle yours?

Azygous, another BYCer recommends gluing the skin flap back onto the wound with Neosporin. She has had success with that method. If any of the flap curls up and dries it may be trimmed off slightly. Usually we don’t recommend wrapping a wound, but it would be good to see it. You would be the best judge of that. They need to be separated from the others, but can be near them in a wire crate.

It’s pretty gnarly I’ll get a pic when I clean her next. Is there any issue with her eating the neosporin?

Here’s day 3 update, we are attempting a betadyne/sugar poultice and we wrapped her again. We had to find some anti stick pads to put over it because the others were drying to almost a skin like consistency and it took forever to moisten the and peel off.

Here’s what the gauze pads looked like dried to her skin versus first peeled off. I feel so bad for this girl. But she’s a trooper!

Telfa non adherent pads are available at Walmart in the first aid aisle. Those do not stick. I would get some Hibiclens chlorhexidene and spray or dab 1/2 strength Hibiclens on the wound. Or use weak betadine or saline. Then apply some plain Neosporin triple antibiotic ointment .

Yes! We have been using the non stick pads, and doing daily cleanings with saline, and then packing with neosporin, see the timeline over the last few days.
