I think that putting them on an adequate diet will solve all feather, skin, and growth problems. If they were mine, there is no way I would stress them by washing them.
thanks for your input! i am glad to 'hear' that there is hope...

fyi: i am supplementing the water with probiotics for poultry and an electrolyte/vitamin mix. i am feeding turkey starter that i moisten with some of this water-mix and am also adding a small amount of organic kefir to it. the chicks gravitate towards it.
they also have access to the dry starter all the time, of course.
in addition to this, i have been giving them scrambled eggs and am hand-feeding the smallest 3 separately (to make sure they have stress-free access).
i mentioned the coconut oil that was suggested in another forum and in case the dry skin continues to be a problem after a week on this food, i will probably lightly brush some oil onto the skin of those affected - but i might already be seeing some slight changes and this won't be necessary after all.
in other words: no bathtime in clerkenwell.
