I've finally finished the run. It's a 10x10 dog kennel with 1/2" hardwire cloth all the way up from bottom to top.

Here's the problem. If I'm going to end up moving it at the end of the summer, I don't really want to bury the rest of the hardwire cloth. So, I'm "skirting" it- about 24" out, rather than burying it straight down into the ground. Seeing as it's nestled at the bottom of the "backyard" deep in predator country, I want to do all I can.

At this point, I can't afford hotwire via a solar charger. So, if I attatch the skirt, cover it with mulch or similar material, even maybe place occasional stones around the edges in addition to the steaks, will this be enough to at least deter diggers? Opininions and Suggestions welcome!

ETA: I've got a heavy population of coons and 'possums, occasional skunks and foxes near the house, as well as a pack of coyotes, possibly mink, and the occasional wandering bobcat.

Use a bunch of landscaping stakes, staggering them all around (not just in a single row), and you should be fine. The grass grew up pretty quickly through the apron around my pens, which anchors it further.

Most diggers won't back up more than 6-8" from what they are trying to dig under. So, in theory, you should be good with 24" just in case they want to prove me wrong

That should work Great! I am planning on adding an apron to my new pen this weekend. My new Fuzzy Butts go out in a week and a half! Yeah!!!

i "skirted" my knucklehead wire runs with a 12" strip of knucklehead wire at the bottom, the grass is growing into it and soon you wont even see it, so far nothing has tried to dig in (we have mostly flying predators such as eagles/hawks but also have raccoons).

Or grab a bunch of old wire coathangers and pair of wire cutters/pliers and make your own stakes. You should be able to make two, maybe three, good stakes out of one coathanger.
