Skunk in live trap= step 2?

Ok, 20 radius maybe. In a confined barn fallout is much greater! I'll go out later and look again!

Once, when DH shot a skunk it sprayed. We tried all the usual suggestions, like tomato juice, to get the smell out. Nothing worked until I tried the eucalyptus horse shampoo. I washed everything with it, and it worked like a charm.

The last time we ever had a skunk in the live trap, we shot it anyway, and hoped we didn't destroy the trap much, then waited for it to air out a couple days.. course by them it no longer smelt like skunk very bad, but more like rotting flesh.
I wouldn't walk up to the cage to shoot it in the head, often times the skunk will tense up while its dieing and release its lovely perfume.

Thats what I do but they always always still stink to high heaven. But it never got on me, I like like to think I am smarter than a dang skunk. LOL

My uncle used to have a lot of problems with skunks and other critters. He would live trap them, then cover the trap, take it way out of town (he lived in the burbs) and release. It never once sprayed while in his trunk, as long as it was covered. Then they had a problem with the skunks being rabid in the area, so he would cover it, transport it out of town, Then shoot it. Can't shoot it in the burbs, cops frown on it. He is the senior accountant for the whole county so knows most of the cops, animal control, etc. quite well. This is what they advised. It has worked like a charm. I think he released it before shooting it though, so it wouldn't spray in the trap.

Walk up to it calmly. Shoot it right in the top of the head with a .22.It will not spray. Take a garbage bag and turn it inside out over your arm. Grab him by the head and pull GB oover his whole body. twist it up and dispose of him in an uninhabited area.

We keep the ingredients for skunk wash in the house at all times. It seems our little black and white dog thinks skunks are her friends!

From our local farm extension service and wildlife dept:

1 large bath towel, to wrap dog in before bringing into the house
1 pint hydrogen peroxide
1/4 Cup baking soda
1 Tablespoon of grease-cutting detergent like Dawn
Large Big Gulp cup to mix everything in

I keep the supplies in a plastic shoebox in the laundry room, just in case

First put on clothes that you don't mind trashing after the skunk bath as your own clothes will be covered with the oily mess as well. Grab the skunk kit and take it to the bath area (preferably and enclosed shower) to get ready before bringing dog in the house. Wrap the dog in a towel before bringing it into the house to bathe. My dogs tend to shake and spit after being skunked so I try to contain the oily spray by wrapping them in a towel. Get the dog into an enclosed shower area, wet the dog down, soap the dog up and rinse. Then mix the peroxide, baking soda, and Dawn in the Big Gulp cup. Cover the dog with the mixture and rub in to the fur. Let sit 10 minutes. Then rinse well and shampoo the dog again with a good shampoo.

You may have to repeat the process 2-4 times in the following week. But it sure beats a skunk-smelly dog.

Was he/she your target? (what were you trying to catch?)
You can just release it a distance away - it isn't a threat. Or release it right there if it wasn't your target - it probably will refrain from taking up residence in the trap again.

Ok, A week ago I was getting hay from atop the pallets and a skunk started spraying(under the pallets) as I got hay. Set the trap and it tripped:empty! Yesterday I went to get hay and a skunk stuck it's head out

;what a rush! Boy can I move! Set the trap , with help of a pitchfork, using dogfood as bait. I do not think that there is only one skunk. By the way skunks will spray out of the cage.

I use a live trap on skunks all the time. I wrapped a cheap tarp
around the sides and bottom and end opposite of the door end.
I use and old slice of bolonga or a hotdog. It works every time. When I get one I load it on the hand trailer and open it up away
from the buildings and my son shoots it with the 12 gage with the wind! They will only spray as a last resort. I killed over a hundred
in the past.
