My 6 girls just had a run in with a hawk. I had the girls out in the yard most of the afternoon. Later I went in to watch Jeopardy. While inside I made sure I had a good view of the yard from a window. I glanced out and saw a few of my girls running and then I saw the hawk swoop down and land near one of them. My heart jumped to my throat and I screamed NO!!!! I ran outside real quick and by the time I got there the hawk was flying back into the woods. At first I only saw 2 of my chicks then another 3 appeared. Right away I realized which one was still missing, Betty, one of our ISA Browns. We started to search for her and calling for her. A few minutes passed and she finally came out. She must have found a real good hiding spot. I let out a huge sigh of relief. We are so lucky not to have lost a single chick. No more free ranging unless I am in the yard with them. I am going to build a bigger pen tomorrow so they can have more protected space when I am not there with them. WHEW!
