So, Apollo is a Friesian, Layla is a Vanner:

Layla tried hard to believe it. "It's okay..." She whispered. "You won't get in trouble... And you don't have to pretend". "Gemma, maybe you should come nap." Shadow said softly.

Pretend? Pretend that she loved her own mother? For a moment Gemma gaped, tears forming in the corners of her eyes, but she wiped them away hurriedly. "I understand, mother," she whispered, hearing Layla's delighted murmurs to her new foal. "I understand." Even naive Gemma could hear that Layla was happy with her new foal, happier than she could ever be with a blind, weak little filly like herself. With a sigh, she gave one last smile at Layla, and climbed into Shadow's stall. She hoped that Layla's new family would give her more pleasure, and less pain, than she had.

"Are you alright, Gemma?" Shadow asked softly, holding her close if she needed to cry.

"No," she closed her eyes. It didn't make a difference if she closed them or not. It was darkness all the same. "I just wish--" she sighed, and huddled against the wall, suddenly very tired. "I just wish I could be who everyone expects me to be."

"Oh dear..." She sighed. "We all love you, no matter what. Even Layla. She has had to raise you since she was a foal. She devoted her life to you, so having you talk to her about grazing, and growing up really hurts her..." She said softly, laying on the ground.

Yeah, he totally gets it from Apollo

I get that same picture when I search for Appaloosa X Freisian, which seems more logical to me. If Layla is a vanner she probably wouldn't have passed down a polka-dotted pattern lik that. With the exception of fleabitten gray, those dots would only come from horses in the 'Leopard complex' (Appaloosas).

What color is Layla? I can do some horse genetic calculations for you and figure out what she would look like, unless you like the way that foal looks like and don't want me to ruin the moment...

"I know," she pressed her head against the wall, sighing. "I know." Her eyes closed from exhaustion, physical and emotional. She didn't even have the heart to even try and look at Shadow, and drifted into a fitful sleep.

Happy twelve moons, she thought to herself sadly.

Shadow watched her sadly.

Layla cried, thinking about Gemma, while her foal slept.
