Hey Stern, you asked me which pup my daughter is hugging. That's Phantom at 5 weeks old, the day after I brought him home.

Before anyone blasts us for taking the dog so early. The breeder was hospitalized due to pregnancy problems and spent the next 3 months in the hospital. Her daughter was born premature but is doing well. I was given the option to let Phantom stay under the care of people hired, not by the breeder but by her husband and mother, or bring him home early. I chose to get him, and it's good I did. The people who took care of the dogs while the breeder was hospitalized made a ton of mistakes, including putting all the puppies from 2 different litters in 1 place for easier cleaning. The pups were taken from their mothers, 3 days after I picked Phantom up. I brought milk replacer for Phantom and spoiled him rotten. He is a well adjusted dog. My older dogs helped as well, they socialized and played with him. I don't like taking pups from their mother that early, but I have raised dogs and cats from birth when mom rejected them or abandoned them. I would recommend that people not take pups before 8 weeks of age, and if a situation arises where you have to, get professional help to ensure the dog is well adjusted and socialized. My sister has been a vet tech for years and taught me how to properly care for pups and kittens taken from mom too early.

So this pup, turned into this, lol.

Here is a kitten I found freezing to death in a tree in my front yard, a week before Thanksgiving. Vets and I estimate she was about 4 weeks old. She was so hypothermic that for 3 days I had to have her tucked under my shirt to help her maintain body heat. She is now a happy kitty. She does still think I am mommy, and she sleeps with me every night.

glad you did the milk replacer. my friend's family made the mistake of bringing home a 5-week year old puppy. worse is they put it on soft food instead of milk. the puppy's diet went for milk to food the next day. I love that kitty!

Oh no! Poor puppy. You are supposed to transition them slowly from milk to food. From 5 weeks to 8 weeks of age he drank milk, and was fed dry puppy food soaked in milk until soft, 3 times a day, there was always some unsoaked milk in his bowl that he was happy to drink. From 8 to 10 weeks of age I cut back on the milk until he was off of it. I did the same for the kitten I rescued. I believe that a puppy or kitten should be with its mother, nursing for as long as she will let him, or at least until 8 weeks old.

Who's mother let him nurse until he was 12 weeks old even though he was eating solid food (and would put himself to bed in a crate and go outside on his own to pee).

Her next litter, no way. After about 5 weeks she was done with them. She wanted to sleep on the sofa out of reach of puppies. But their father did a fantastic job raising them with help from their uncle and Who, their older half brother. Aunties and Uncles can sometimes do a better job raising pups to have dog manners than a fed up by then mother!

And some mothers will kill and eat their pups after birth. You can never tell how a female will react , each litter is different.

But for maximum benefit to the pups, they should be nursing at least 6-8 weeks and stay with their mom till 8 weeks old for socialization. Selling pups too soon is bad for the puppies.

I wasnt happy picking Phantom up at such an early age. But my breeders mom called and said that she had been given specific instructions to call me and let me know what was going on and that I had a choice. I thought if my breeder, who was in the hospital, is that concerned then I should follow her advice and get my puppy.

OMG! What breed? Giant Schnauzers?

They're related to Giant Schnauzers but are Black Russian Terriers. One of those pups, their father and a son from another litter are all in the top 25 and so far are qualified for the 2014 AKC/Eukanuba show.
