Hi everyone...
I just got my chicks yesterday from TSC. They took to their new living quarters rather well. All are lively and eating and drinking. The question I have is about their sleeping habits. Yesterday they all slept standing up. They were like this all day and night. Today I cleaned their container and went back to check on them a few minutes later and they were all laying down asleep. I was just suprised to see this. This is ok right? Does it mean they are now more comfortable with the new surroundings? Thanks all........

Are they doing the "dead chick" pose now?

I think they are fine. Got mine yesterday as well. Still trying to adapt the temp for them. I gave up trying to keep it at 95F with the last batch. Spend 3 days at least finding how high up or low they like the heat lamp!

I know!!!! First time I had chicks I totally freaked when I saw them. Scared the beejeebers out of them when I screamed!

Congrats on yours. You'll soon be complaining that they've grown so fast!!!!

This happened to me as well. They got quiet and when I went to look they were laying down like they were dead.

Okay, this is something I have been wondering about! Why do most chicks sleep standing up the first day? My theory (and I certainly may be wrong) is that it has to do with survival. My chicks were shipped in some way, even those I bought at my local feed store. The conditions are usually crowded, so I started thinking about what would happen to a chick who decided to lay down in these crowded conditions. Probably not pretty.

Once they know they have room to lay down without being trampled, which may take 1 or 2 days, they learn they can spread out. In fact, they crash!

Any thoughts?

I got my chicks yesterday too - only two. They both will occasionally stretch one leg out behind them and fall over, out cold. Almost like narcolepsy. It's pretty cute.

Makes sense, to me!

LOL! Yes, mine were doing that too, eating like crazy, then 2 seconds later, falling asleep with their beak in the dish. Standing up no less! So funny. I think they are pretty tired for a few days, probably just like our babies, lots of sleeping, with some eating and pooping mixed in.

Enjoy!
