I have 6 button quail living in a large cage right now, as I'm in the process of splitting them up into pairs. Just today I noticed one of my females, a Golden Pearl, looking very weak and puffy in the corner of the cage. Her eyes were closed and she seemed very sleepy. I picked her up and she was extremely light. Just a couple days ago she was fine - normal weight, normal activity. I guess the only thing I noticied is that she was sleepier than usual, but nothing I really thought I should be concerned about. What could have caused this drastic change? Could it be due to her starting to lay eggs? One of the females was already laying, but another one just started, so it's possible it was her. However, I wouldn't think these changes would be brought about by that, but it's the only thing I can think of.
Right now I have her seperated from the others under a low amount of heat. I gave her sugar water and mixed in some of their eggs with their normal gamebird crumble food. Is there anything else I can do for her?
Thank you for any help/suggestions
