What can I add to my automatic water to keep the slime and algae down ? It's a home brew water bucket with chicken nipples

Are the parts all plastic or otherwise non-corrodable? If so then use about two tablespoons of vinegar to the gallon of water. Deters slime (bio-film) very well. But only if the parts the water is in contact with cannot easily corrode.

You could also add Apple Cider Vinegar. It is really good for the chickens' gut as well as keeping algae at bay.

Make sure it is plastic, as metal waterers with ACV can give chickens heavy metal poisoning.

I agree. Plus it seems to perk them up. Suggested amounts I have heard is anywhere from 1 to 3 tablespoons per 1 gallon of water.

I put in two capfulls of ACV per gallon.

For my dog, I put pennies in her water. Keeps the algae down for a month at a time (by then it's time to clean the waterers anyways).

It will be all plastic and PVC. Going to built it this week when I'm off. I have all the hard ware to build t just ain't had the time yet . Thanks guys

A piece of copper in the tank won't harm the chickens. If no light can get through the plastic then there will be little to keep any biological activity going.
