I came home from work today to find one of my girls scrabbling along the ground unable to walk.
Her leg on one side was bent outward (sideways, not behind her ) from the hock at an unnatural angle, and the joint seems dislocated. I can move it back into the correct position but it will just slip out. I cannot feel any broken or fractured bone. The joint is swollen.
After examining her I think it might be a slipped tendon, something I haven't dealt with before, and possibly infected joint prior to/causing this.
She had been limping recently, and I had put her in a small run to restrict her movement, and thought it was due to overmating (most of the drakes have been separated from the girls now, so this is no longer an issue) and was hoping it would come right by itself. Now wondering if she had an infection in her joint as this seems to be something that the ducks in her 'family' are prone to. Her mother or grand mother and a sibling have had joint issues. No unrelated ducks have had any joint issues.
So anyway, has anyone out there had any experience treating this in adults? Most of what I can find online is specific to chicks and ducklings and talks about them growing out of it, so probably not that useful for how to deal with this in an adult... What was the outcome?
Also does anyone know the dose for flucloxacillin in ducks? I have read references to this being ok to use in ducks but cannot find anything anywhere on dosage? I have 500mg capsules, so looking for a mg/kg guide I can dilute to. This is the only antibiotic I have available, and cannot get any others without a long drive and a hefty vet bill...
I have attempted to splint the leg into the correct position and that seems to have helped as she is able to put weight on it now. She is indoors where it is warm, confined to a small cage tonight. She is eating and drinking normally.
Any advice, links experiences would,be appreciated. Also any suggestions on herbs, supplements etc that may also aid in healing...
Thanks
