I just did my second hatch and one of the chicks had something I had never seen or read about wrong with it's legs. I did a search and found out it was slipped achilled tendons. This chick had it in both legs and had been getting around on it's hocks which were swollen and split. I did the pushing them back into place and taping them but it just wasn't working and I had to cull. I had one more in the incubator that I noticed there was the same thing with one of it's legs. I pushed that one back and it stayed and that chick is fine.
I'm just wondering if this is something that occurs often, or if its heritery (sp) or if there is something else that went wrong. I'm holding back on hatching anymore until I find some more info about this so maybe I can work to avoid it.
These were all silkies from my own flock and 29 chicks hatched.

If anyone has any experience with this or any information it would be appreciated. It's really making me not want to hatch anymore......until I look at all the healthy happy chicks that I do have and I say maybe.

I had that happen with a chick hatched in Feb, taped it and it is fine. In my research, I read something about it being caused by a vitamin deficiency in the mother. I'm afraid I don't recall which vitamin though.

Thankyou for the responses and the link. I will check it out. There's alot of people hatching alot of chicks I'm assuming this doesn't happen too often. I just got unlucky.
