Five days with no posts on this thread...getting out my feather duster.
I do believe my Rooster-bator must have malfunctioned! Turns out one of the Button Quail that I thought was male is female. Woohoo! That or the other one is laying two eggs every single day...in different colors.
It's slow in the quail pens here. I still get eggs everyday but I'm not hatching any out till spring so it's pickled or cooked in some way. My nephew loves to eat them like popcorn. So he drops by a couple times a month to get himself a bowl full of goodies.
I have 3 Texas A & M's and getting 1 egg. I'm hoping i'll get at least 2 eggs a day when it warms up. They are all the same age and I havne't witnessed any breeding going on but i'm not out there long enough to stand and wait around. It's too cold. I try to keep them covered up away from drafts on the colder days. It's warming up around here for a few days. Thats how our winters are. Cold spell then it warms up. Just a wet muddy mess in winter. Next month and February are our worst weather months. But it still warms up and melts what has frozen. We always worry about the ice storms. Two years ago it took out a large area for weeks. It got Kentucky and Tennessee. Our power was out for 5 days and we stayed in our trailer bundled up the entire time. We found a kerosene heater the last day and it ended up having holes in the tank and was more of a fire hazard than anything. The place stunk of kerosene for months after that too.
The quail are in the shed and they get covered up to keep off the drafts and they stay dry. I'll be glad to get them outside again so they can have the fresh air and it's easier to clean up after. When the weather breaks in Feb or March i'll be hatching again. Right now all I'm hatching are silkies. I should have plenty to choose from this spring and I'll sell off the rest.
I have some champion stock Buff Orphington eggs due to be delivered in March along with a shipment of exotic feather footed breeds. I suppose those will be a mixture. The Buff's are the large ones like the B/B/S breeds.
