slow queit and bumping into things

We had a discovery this morning!!!!--- we found a tick on her comb about the size of a pin head, when we pulled it out it seemed loose we are thinking is was feeding lower down the feathers on her head and moved up to a open place-her comb! she is getting better!

Back again, she's better and eating food when we put it in front of her but she still seems to walk around bumping into things and following other chickens, what could this be? blindness? could she still be effected by that tick?

Here are some good links regarding spirochetosis, a disease caused by ticks. Your vet may be able to test your chicken for this. It is treated with penicillin, Tylan, tetracycline, and others. Read the last link through the last page about a chicken with this disease: http://www.developmentvet.aun.edu.eg/poultry diseases fourth year/ch1_15.htm

Thanks, but she doesn't seem to have the symptoms of spirochetes, only weight loss and hey eyes look fine any other ideas? thanks!

UPDATE (if anyone really cares)

Spritey, is alive and well, we removed the tick and now she just seems to be permanently blind she's eating and drinking well, her eyes look normal but she can still see big things like other chickens and people, and her food. thanks for the help but it still is confusing...

Sorry that Spritey is blind, but I'm glad to hear she is still doing alright. Blindness is fairly common due to vitamin A and E deficiency in the parent stock or the chicks, salmonella, aspergillosis, avian encephalomyelitis, and many other diseases. Here is a good link to read: http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/ps031

thanks, i read the page... its still a mystery because its not mareks her eye is perfectly round and normal color and all the other eye problems are to do with infections blisters puss ect, which she shows no signs of? quite confusing and if its just blindness with age, you would think her eyes would be fogy or grey in color? seems most like the vitamin deficiency like you said but we give them shell grit and seed and let them graze in the paddocks why would she have a vitamin deficiency? thanks.

sorry i think i misunderstood you... you said it could be a vitamin deficiency in the parents... that's quite possible because we got spritey as a chick (a black commercial) from a commercial farm supply place not a private seller. but the thing wrong with that is that why could she see fine before?
